another round

Friday was delightful. We ushered out an NTN era with grace, style and verve. Well verve anyway. Verve and beer.

I did see my name up there as game winner, which is all I really cared about. Well not all but I really did want to win a game. I’m much more competitive then I realized. I used to think I wasn’t competitive because I hated losing. Turns out that’s sort of the definition of competitive. Heh.

Anyway after what I thought was a lovely send off for our electronic trivia I found out that it’ll be around for 2 more months. Well we’ll just have to do it again later. Actually the 2 month reprieve is a trial period, and if enough people come in and play (and spend money) they’ll keep it around. So head on over to the
flatiron & firkin and play a game or two. We may have an organized evening out at some point; I’ll keep you posted. You can meet Maria and I! Lucky things. We’ll sign autographs but only on boobs. We’re edgy like that.

fare thee well

I’m going to the flatiron tonight, for a historic outing with Maria. It is the end of an era.

An NTN era.

I’m sad. It’s so much fun to do trivia while drinking. If you’ve never tried it you’ve never lived! I don’t know why the combination works so well together. Not that NTN is the only form of drunken trivia around. Not by any means. When I was in university we would go to Jimmy Jazz for trivia night. They handed out paper and some guy yelled out the questions. The table with the most right won a free pitcher of beer! We never did won but it sure was fun. I’m not entirely sure we ever actually made it to the point where we handed in our answers but we did try. I remember that.

Tonight I hope to see my name up on that screen at least once. I brought my camera so I can capture the moment, should it ever arrive. Beer makes me smart. I’ll try to get to the ‘Professor Barney’ stage.

the amazing magic robot

Last night was so much fun. Maria was a huge success, she usually is so that's nothing new. I'm gonna have to bring her with me everywhere - the ultimate party favour. Anyway aside from becoming painfully full of potatoes (what else is new), I played The Amazing Magic Robot game. Man there are like a million different versions of this game. It's great, but it made me realize how much more kids were expected to know in the 40's. I feel that I learned more about processes than actual facts in school, and by school I mean from kindergarten to 3rd year university. And by processes I mean telling people what they want to hear. Ah well.

At least I know how to make a footnote. No wait, I can't. But I can do endnotes.

high score

Hayley cleaned my apartment while she was staying with me. Can I tell you how much I love this woman. I've actually been cleaning up after myself, y'know now that it's nice. Anyway for tomorrow's Wednesday dinner I'm bringing Maria to meet the in-laws. It'll be a hoot. I'll have to bring Hayley sometime too.

So - last night Maria 'twisted my arm' and made me go to the flatiron with her. Actually she said 'I'm paying' so naturally I went. She even bought me mashed potatoes and gravy. Delish. While we were playing
NTN I saw a woman walk by with the EXACT same purse as me. The pub is underground so we see everyone as they walk by. Maria has a special 'hot guy' alert for cuties that walk by.
Do do do do do do. Something like that. It keeps her from yelling ' wow he's hot' at passersby. Anyway I made it into the high scores last night. I was number ten mind you and soon got pushed off the list (by Maria) but I was thrilled to see my name up there (when it was just Maria and I playing I beat her).

survey and wednesday dinner

So I took the survey that's on Maria's blog today. Mine is on my diaryland account, tho technically it's not a quiz.

So it's wednesday - this means good food (specifically mashed potatoes), board games and embarrassing conversations. That's right......it's dinner with Jer's family. I love starting new traditions, don't you?

happy birthday and tequila

If you haven’t already, check out Maria's entry today, I laughed so hard. Jeremy’s 23rd birthday was yesterday, we had supper at his family’s place then went out for beer with his friends. I got to see Identity, SUCH a good movie. I highly recommend it. Supper was great, mashed potatoes with green onions chopped up and mixed right in there. Delish. Next time I go over for dinner I’m not leaving without some sort of tupperware filled with potatoes. We went out to Gabby’s (surprise) with Kevin and his brother Brian, and in the true spirit of birthday celebration I insisted on an alarming amount of tequila. The guys had something called prairie fire that, judging from the expressions on their faces, I will probably never try.

I know I know

It's been forever since my last post but nobody reads this anyway. Anyhoo, went to the rib and beer festival thing downtown. It was great, we (Jer, Maria and I) didn't stay too long but we were at the flatiron pre and post ribs. We just can't stay away from there. I tried an apricot wheat beer that was delish. Seriously, it tasted like peach iced tea or something, it was my favorite of the day. The place serving that will be opening soon, close to my apartment. A nice patio with good food microbrews, sounds perfick. Can't wait.

shrek and rodney graham

tonight's my date with maria, pizza, beer and shrek.......so romantic. anyway the AGO was great, there was this exhibition by a fellow called rodney graham. it was a lot of looping video segments and audio stations. there was this one video that was cinnamon granules on a stovetop as it heated up. sounds boring but it was shot in some weird filter so all you saw at first was a black screen, then these little twinkling lihgts start appearing. after awhile more and more appear and form into this spiral pattern. soon the filament itself is heated so its a solid spiral. then it loops back to the beginning. its all in black and white. really cool.

scary place and new bar

Ok, I wanted to get this all in last night but when I came home inhaled a sub (the perfect sub- 6 inch steak and cheese, double meat, extra sauce, black olives and lettuce)and crashed.

anyhoo, I actually called a place and was going to go see it but as soon I mentioned the area to people at work I got the 'you're crazy' face. So I googled the intersection and lets just say I don't think I could live in a place where more than two prostitutes have been killed. So that was a bust. But the positive side is that I called a place with minimal nervousness. So today I will try again.

now, what I did end up doing last night was go out for a beer. What else is new...... I had planned on getting together with an old friend from university. Well actually, had I decided to go see the place I would have dragged him along. Anyway, went to a bar with a nice rooftop patio. Can't remember the name - help me out here Jer. I want to take Maria, no NTN but we can go for a pitcher, then head over to our home away from home, the flatiron.

Apartment hunt

Wow. I had no idea how many shitty apartments were in Toronto (country girl). I saw a place today that was soooooooooooooo small but was right in the heart of downtown. I'm still really torn about taking it. The price is very right too. But every place I looked at today smelled like cat pee. WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE THESE PEEING CATS??????????? I don't understand this. But I will be reconnecting with an old dear friend soon who has the know about Toronto, so maybe he can give me some pointers. As for my mentor, Maria DPD, she has abandoned me for Mexico and so I am all alone to find my place. But maybe that was meant to be. Mentors can only guide, they cannot do things for you. On a plus note I got my mother to try sushi for the first time and I tried the scary king of sushi (no California rolls here), of raw fish and genuinely like it. I am cooler than I thought.
